Loss of power and sluggish acceleration
Excessive fuel consumption with no clear reason
Black, blue or white smoke from the exhaust
Engine overheating — temperature gauge in the red
Oil or coolant leaks visible under the car
Loud knocking or rattling noise from the engine bay

Engine Problems Specific to Dubai's Climate

Dubai's combination of extreme heat, stop-start traffic and high-speed motorway driving creates a uniquely harsh environment for car engines. When ambient temperature is 45°C, your coolant system is working flat-out just to keep the engine at operating temperature — before you've even touched the accelerator. Any weakness in the coolant system, whether a failing thermostat, a weeping hose or a low coolant level, can quickly escalate into overheating and serious engine damage.

Oil breakdown is the other major concern. In cooler climates, engine oil maintains its viscosity and lubrication properties between service intervals. In Dubai's heat, particularly for cars that sit in the sun all day then run hard, oil oxidises and thickens faster. If you're still following a 15,000 km oil change interval in Dubai, you're likely running on degraded oil for the last 5,000 km of every interval. We recommend 10,000 km maximum — or every 6 months — for Dubai conditions.

Sand ingestion is a less obvious but real threat. Dubai's frequent dust storms and sandy environment mean air filters clog much faster than manufacturers expect. A partially blocked air filter leans out the fuel mixture and forces the engine to work harder for the same output — increasing fuel consumption and wear simultaneously. We check air filter condition at every service visit, not just on the printed service schedule.

At FixHive we've seen these patterns thousands of times over 18+ years in Dubai. We diagnose the root cause — not just the symptom — using multi-system OBD2 diagnostics that check every control unit simultaneously, not just the engine management light.

Our Process

How We Diagnose & Fix the Problem

1
OBD2 Multi-System Scan

We connect our diagnostic system to every available control module — not just the engine ECU. Faults often hide in neighbouring systems like the transmission, ABS or body control module, and cross-referencing them gives the full picture.

2
Oil & Coolant Assessment

We check oil level, colour and viscosity, and test coolant concentration with a refractometer. Degraded coolant loses its corrosion inhibitors and boiling-point protection — a common hidden cause of overheating.

3
Live Data Analysis

We monitor real-time data from sensors — fuel trims, coolant temp, injector pulse width, cam and crank position — while the engine runs. This reveals intermittent faults that don't always store as codes.

4
Physical Inspection

We inspect belts, hoses, gasket faces for seepage, the PCV system, and look for signs of overheating history (staining, warped plastic). We also do a compression test if misfires or power loss suggest internal wear.

5
Repair & Road Test

Every repair is followed by a full road test under load to confirm the fault is resolved — not just cleared from the ECU. We verify fuel trims, coolant temperature curve and exhaust smoke before handing the car back.

What We Check

  • Automatic & manual gearbox service — fluid condition checked, correct spec fluid replenished, service interval reset
  • Gearbox oil change — fresh gear oil keeps internal components lubricated and prevents expensive wear
  • Clutch replacement (manual) — full clutch kit including pressure plate, friction disc and release bearing replaced as a set
  • Transmission fluid flush — complete drain and refill of automatic transmission fluid using the correct OEM-approved fluid
  • Turbo inspection & repair — boost pressure tested, wastegate and actuator checked, oil feed lines inspected for restrictions
  • Engine overhaul & rebuild — full strip-down, measurement, machining and reassembly to restore compression and power
Why FixHive

Certified Engine Experts

🖥️

Computer Diagnostics

We plug in and read every fault code before any guesswork. Our diagnostic equipment covers all major brands including BMW, Mercedes, Toyota and Ford — giving us manufacturer-level data, not just generic OBD codes.

🔩

Genuine & OEM Parts

We use genuine manufacturer parts or high-quality OEM equivalents — never cheap aftermarket that fails again in 3 months. Every part comes with a warranty and is documented so you know exactly what went into your car.

🏁

Road-Tested After Every Job

Every engine or gearbox job is followed by a test drive. We don't hand your car back until we're confident it's running right — smooth, quiet and performing exactly as it should.

Engine & Transmission Service Pricing in Dubai

A standard engine service — oil change, filter replacement and basic inspection — typically costs AED 250–600 depending on the engine size, oil specification required, and vehicle brand. European cars requiring fully synthetic 0W-40 or specific low-SAPS oils are at the higher end; Japanese and Korean cars running standard 5W-30 are at the lower end. Labour is a small part of this cost; oil quality is the biggest variable.

Timing chain or timing belt replacement is one of the most significant engine jobs. Belt-driven engines (common in Japanese, Korean, and many European brands) typically run AED 800–2,200 for the belt, tensioners, idler pulleys and water pump done together. Chain-driven engines that develop rattling or require chain tensioner replacement range from AED 1,200–3,500 — Toyota V6 timing chains and BMW N-series chains are at the upper end due to labour complexity.

Head gasket repairs are intensive jobs with wide price variation: AED 2,500–6,000 depending on the engine configuration and whether the head is warped and requires resurfacing. Automatic transmission fluid changes run AED 400–900; a full transmission overhaul is AED 3,500–9,000 depending on make and extent of wear. Main dealer pricing for these same jobs typically runs 50–100% higher.

At FixHive, every engine or transmission job begins with a written quote you must approve before we start. If we discover additional issues during the work — say, a cracked gasket surface or a seized timing tensioner — we stop and call you. You decide how to proceed, not us.

Cooling system work is frequently bundled with engine service and represents good value when done together. A thermostat replacement costs AED 150–400; a radiator flush is AED 120–180; a water pump replacement (often done alongside the timing belt) adds AED 200–500 in parts and labour. In Dubai's heat, a failing cooling system can destroy an engine quickly — preventive replacement of a borderline water pump during a timing belt job costs a fraction of the repair bill if it fails separately on the road.

Engine mounts are another commonly overlooked item. A worn engine mount causes vibration at idle and under acceleration, and can allow enough movement to stress exhaust joints and transmission linkages. Replacement costs AED 250–600 per mount depending on the vehicle and mount location. It's often not on a standard service checklist but makes a noticeable difference in refinement when done.

What Dubai Drivers Get Wrong About Engine Service

Myth: "As long as the engine warning light is off, nothing is wrong."

The engine warning light illuminates only when the ECU detects a fault code. Many real problems — worn timing chains, low oil pressure at startup, early bearing wear — don't trigger fault codes until significant damage has already occurred. Oil pressure, temperature and mechanical noise are the real indicators, and those require a trained ear and proper instruments, not just a dashboard light.

Myth: "Thicker oil protects the engine better in Dubai's heat."

Running a heavier viscosity than the manufacturer specifies actually reduces protection at startup — the critical moment when 70–80% of engine wear occurs. Dubai's heat does matter, but modern engine designs account for it in the spec. Using the correct grade (often 0W-20 or 5W-30 in modern engines) ensures fast circulation on cold start, which is exactly when you need protection most. Always use the grade in the owner's manual.

Myth: "Automatic transmissions are sealed for life and never need fluid changes."

Some manufacturers label their ATF as "lifetime fill" — meaning lifetime of the transmission, not the car. In stop-and-go Dubai traffic and high ambient temperatures, ATF degrades faster than in temperate climates. Most transmission specialists recommend a fluid change every 60,000–80,000 km regardless of what the handbook says, because degraded fluid is the primary cause of early clutch pack and valve body wear.
